The Traditional Nikolospiel

On 5 December, the “Miglotog” takes place in Tauplitz village – that’s how Saint Nicholas Day is referred to in this mountain community. A traditional procession, one of the oldest in the province, Saint Nick and his companions make their way from Klachau to the village square. The procession takes place twice, accompanied by the sounds of snapping whips and ringing of bells.

6 PM Gasthof Moser in Klachau
7:30 PM village square in Tauplitz

The traditional Nikolospiel in Tauplitz village involves 60 masked participants: Saint Nicholas on his horse and various characters representing light and darkness. The Krampus masks were made by local carvers and have human features.
The “Schab” – men wrapped in straw – herald the arrival of the procession by loudly cracking their whips. The mounted Saint Nick is an impressive sight as he approaches the children. Yet another much-anticipated moment is a performance of the so-called “Everyman Scene”, when a man dressed in rags and consumed by alcohol begs a priest to accept his confession. Cobblers and tailors open the play, while the prince of hell Lucifer and his dark companions bring it to a conclusion. The variety of scenes and figures makes this unique example of folk theater truly special. Incidentally: The texts which accompany the Nikolospiel are some of the oldest of their kind anywhere in the province.
