For the best views: Hike to the Lawinenstein elev. 1965m

The Tauplitz is famous for its 360° panorama spanning hundreds of peaks. And the best views of all can be enjoyed from the Lawinenstein, enthroned like a balcony above the Ausseerland - Salzkammergut region and marking its center. 

This tour greets you with 360° panoramic views spanning hundreds of peaks. Remarkably, this incomparable scenery will cost you relatively little effort: Other than one climb of roughly 200 vertical meters, the hike is not particularly strenuous – as you stride across green alpine meadows and gentle ridgelines. With every step you take, you will leave the outside world farther behind and rediscover your own center – not particularly surprising, since the Lawinenstein also marks the center point of Bad Mitterndorf in the heart of Ausseerland - Salzkammergut.

You will walk from the mountain terminal of the quad chairlift along the country path heading west, below the Hollhaus and as far as the lower station of the chairlift on the Lawinenstein, one of three Tauplitz ski mountains. From there, path 274 leads you gently uphill alongside light forests of larch and pine. You will now continue just below the chairlift, through a series of switchbacks across the mountainside leading to the s’Kriemandl Hütte at the mountain station of the chairlift. Here, you are already at 1885 m above sea level. Your hike now takes you along a broad ridgeline, initially slightly downhill, then uphill to the left – bringing you to the highest point, the Lawinenstein. The summit of this 1965 m tall mountain is a flat plateau that is essentially a balcony high above Ausseerland - Salzkammergut. Since there is no danger of falling, you can simply relax and enjoy the view. Which you should absolutely do, since it isn’t every day you are treated to such a spectacular sight: the mighty Grimming, enthroned above Ennstal, the glaciated and legendary Dachstein massif, the rugged rock walls of the Totes Gebirge, the Niedere Tauern, Grundlsee and the beautiful lake plateau of the Tauplitzalm, which is, incidentally, the biggest of its kind in Central Europe. All in all: a heart-stirring hike!
