Romantic Hike: Tauplitzalm – Bad Mitterndorf

Mountain Lakes, silent Valley, gurgling stream

This tour is dedicated to romantic nature lovers: Alongside three mountain lakes, a broad and rocky alpine saddle will bring you to the banks of the Salzabach, which flows gently downhill, its gurgling waters gently soothing the soul and senses

Awaiting you along this tour are countless examples of natural beauty: You will walk through idyllic Tauplitzalm village, perhaps take a detour to the small mountain church with its colorful stained-glass windows, and come to the Tauplitzsee – a dark, shimmering moorland lake where dragonflies put on a vividly spectacular display. In early summer, the surrounding meadows are transformed into an iridescent sea of flowers, where purple rhododendron, velvety blue gentian, hellebore and Carthusian pink bloom by the millions.

Route Description

You will walk east from the mountain terminal of the quad chairlift through Tauplitzalm village, then a little downhill to the Tauplitzsee and from there in a westerly direction to the Großsee, where many visitors like to take a break in order to feed the quacking ducks there. If you continue, you will soon come to the romantic Märchensee – an emerald-green natural gem. Shortly thereafter you will reach the Öderntörl, a broad rocky ridge between Schneiderkogel and Traweng. At this point, you will hike into a silent valley and follow the narrow, though very walkable trail down the mountain to the Ödernalm huts which lie at 1250 m above sea level. Now continue along the forestry lane following the banks of the Salzabach, which flows slowly downhill and soothes your senses with its gentle murmuring. After 4 km, next to the hut located at the Rechenplatz, you will turn right onto another forestry lane. Now comes 250 m towards the mouth of the valley before making your way somewhat uphill on a forestry lane to your right – a curve at the end of this path brings you to the marked tour leading to Bad Mitterndorf, the center of our region.

Tip

Bad Mitterndorf offers everything you need for a beautiful hiking holiday: cafés, bars and restaurants, shops for groceries, a full selection of sporting goods, books and even an extraordinary shop for folk fashions. The streets are pleasant and full of life!
