Route Description

Set out from the mountain terminal of the quad chairlift on the Tauplitzalm heading east – along a country lane or across the alpine meadows, past the Tauplitzsee – a dark, glistening moorland lake, on the shores of which the dragonflies put on a spectacular display. As you pause to watch them, you will undoubtedly feel the lightness of life. At the Sterngassl, turn left towards the Steirersee and you will quickly reach your destination: the popular Steirersee-Bankerl, where the bench invites you to “take the weight off your feet” for as long as you wish. From here, you have a marvelous view of the legendary Sturzhahn, once Heinrich Harrer’s favorite mountain to climb (and he was the first to do so, via the 200 meters-high west face!).

You can now hike back the same way, returning to the mountain lift terminal in Tauplitzalm village, or stop for refreshments instead at the huts on the Steirersee. To do so, simply backtrack to the Sterngassl, then make a left in the direction of the huts. All that fresh air is guaranteed to work up an appetite – luckily, the cooks at the huts know precisely what will “hit the spot”: for example, a fragrant cup of coffee, delicious farmhouse doughnuts, or a plate of homemade apple strudel. Or would you prefer something a little heartier? At the Steirersee huts, you have a wide variety of range of dishes to choose from, guaranteeing you will find the perfect palate-pleaser.

Tip

The path to the Steirersee-Bankerl is well-maintained and nicely surfaced, even suitable for prams and wheelchairs. The quad chairlift will be happy to transport both up the mountain – and our helpful employees will be glad to assist.
