Route Description

Setting out from the mountain terminal of the quad chairlift on the Tauplitzalm, you will head in the direction of the Steirersee and the Grazerhaus refuge hut – incidentally, back in the 1930s mountaineering icon Heinrich Harrer used to manage this very hut. Shortly after the Grazerhaus, you will come to the trail which leads to the summit of the Traweng. The trail is narrow and soon becomes very steep, but it is clearly marked. You will encounter a gully of scree, where you will need to use your hands for safety. After about half an hour – passing a small cave – you will reach the flatter portion of the ascent. We recommend taking the less direct route.  Boulders, areas of karst and sinkholes accompany you on your way to the top. The scenery is overwhelming and it is no exaggeration to say – the Totes Gebirge, Grimming, Dachstein and Niedere Tauern are all literally right there in front of your nose! Enjoy the panoramic views from this 1981 m summit. Finally, return via the original route.

Since you are already there on the Tauplitz, we suggest spending the night: For example, you will find plenty of lodging options in Tauplitzalm village, along with delicious eateries and high-spirited companionship.
